AWACS
Airborne Warning And Control System
Ok, ok, these aircraft are not really the ones you
wanna use for exploring new scenery. But hey, what's a reconnaissance collection
without these electronic monsters ? And anyway, I also have to serve those
guys who love to ride the heavies (them VA folks)....
Lockheed EC-121R Warning Star
Name: conmilv2.zip
Author: Jim Goldman
Version: FS98
Size: 858 kB
Remark: sound files included
History: In 1939 Lockheed began with the development of the L-49 as
a large four-engined civil aircraft. When the USA entered WWII, the concept
was changed to the military transporter C-69, which first flew in January
1943. After the war the design was converted back to its original role,
and the first L049 Constellations were put into service with Pan American
Airways in 1946. The characteristic long slender fuselage and the triple
tailfin of the Constellation could soon be seen at all major airports
of the world. The long range and the pressurized cabin made
the Constellation superior to most of her rivals.
The USAF version EC-121R were former Navy WV-2/EC-121Ks stripped of
their radomes, camouflaged, and used for specialized electronic messions
during the 1960's 70's. The EC-121R was equipped to process relayed data
from air-delivered ground-seismic devices along major jungle routes in
Vietnam.
Grumman E-2C Hawkeye
Name: e-2_fs6.zip
Author: Terry Hill
Version: FS95
Size: 75 kB
Remark:
History: Carrier-borne AEW aircraft (Airborne Early Warning). The E-2
is a twin-turboprop aircraft with four tailfins, three of which include
rudders --- the starboard inboard fin is the one without. It would pleasant
to the eye, if it did not have a large saucer radome on its back. The E-2A
and E-2B were technically rather unreliable; the much improved E-2C with
its modern electronics can direct up to 36 fighters at a single time. It
proved very effective in Vietnam and the Middle-East. The radar is continuously
upgraded, the current version being the AN/APS-145. New engines have also
been introduced, the more powerful and efficient T56-A-427. Delivery still
continues, and the E-2 will be around well into the 21th century. The E-2
has been sold to Israel, Japan, Singapore, Egypt and Taiwan; Thailand and
France have ordered some.
Boeing E-3A Sentry
Name: e3-sen.zip
Author: Terry Hill
Version: FS5
Size: 94 kB
Remark:
History: The E-3 AWACS, based on a 707 airframe, offers superior surveillance
capabilities.
Equipped with a "look-down" radar, the AWACS can separate airborne targets
from the ground and sea clutter returns that confuse other present-day
radars. Built by Boeing in Seattle, the Airborne Warning and Control System
(AWACS) fills the needs of both airborne surveillance, and command, control
and communications (C3) functions for tactical and air defense forces.
It provides a highly mobile, survivable surveillance and C3 platform.
This space is reserved for: Ilyushin Il-76 "Mainstay"
Does anybody know of such an FS aircraft ?
